Abstract. The article considers the activity of Ufa governor I. F. Shcherbatsky (1873-1876) in the area of the development of medical service in the region. During the study the authors come to the conclusion that the head of the province made a weighty contribution to the improvement of the health of the population of the province. In particular, I. F. Shcherbatsky took effective measures against the spreading of such diseases as epidemic of smallpox, scarlet fever, measles; he also petitioned the Ministry of Internal Affairs for strengthening the staff of doctors and medical assistants. The official directed a campaign of vaccinations and suggested establishing a Medical Assistants’ School in Ufa for training medical personnel.
