Abstract. The article is devoted to the consideration of the mechanisms of the origin and functioning of political and religious elites, as well as conditions that lead to their collapse. The authors suppose that different types of elites are brought to life and removed from historical scene by the combination of socio-economic and spiritual factors. For example, the bourgeoisie (and its earlier version - merchant class) thrives in centralized states with safe trade routes. The aristocracy is historically claimed in the conditions of political and economic instability. Spiritual elite always changes in terms of the collapse of the dominant culture.
