WINE IN THE TRADITIONAL CHINESE PHILOSOPHY

Sun Tsze
Hainan State University, People’s Republic of China

Abstract. Wine and wine-drinking played an important, though not similar role in all the major religious and philosophical doctrines of traditional China. If for the Confucians, who focused on maintaining harmony in society and its conformity with universal ethical laws, wine was a means for the stratification of human community, then for Taoists, on the contrary, it served as a means for the decomposition, removal of culturally motivated barriers between people and cosmos. The Taoist viewpoint is related with an approach that was practiced by the Buddhist mystics, for whom intoxication was a method for the emancipation of the creative potentials of a human being, and creation itself - a method to achieve enlightenment.
