CHARITABLE ACTIVITY OF THE TATAR COMMUNITY OF KAZAKHSTAN IN THE PRE-REVOLUTIONARY PERIOD (BY THE EXAMPLE OF THE CITY OF PETROPAVLOVSK)

Abstract. The Tatars are one of historically established diaspora in Kazakhstan. The Tatar diaspora in this region was distinguished from other ethnic groups by the prevalence of urban population over rural, the higher proportion of merchants and petty bourgeois, whose basic type of employment were trade and entrepreneurship. The biggest cities to accumulate the Tatar population in the Kazakh steppe were Petropavlovsk and Semipalatinsk. On the basis of archival materials the author analyzes the charitable activity of Petropavlovsk Tatar community in the pre-revolutionary period, examines various forms and trends of the Tatars’ charitable activity.
