Abstract. The article provides comprehensive study of pledge, traces pledge genesis, reveals the basic provisions of the pledge agreement in the modern legislation. The paper identifies and justifies relationship between the historically adopted approach to pledge relations and the modern legislation and judicial practice. The author focuses on the concept "bona fide purchaser", analyzes security of rights and interests of such purchasers, identifies and describes the basic concepts of pledge. Special attention is paid to identifying conditions to dismiss pledge. Such an approach will be of interest both for practising lawyers and lawyers-theoreticians.
