MENTAL ILLNESSES AS OBJECT OF RELIGIOUS-PHILOSOPHICAL UNDERSTANDING

Novikov Aleksandr Vladimirovich
Don State Technical University

Abstract. The article is devoted to the description of the attempt of understanding the phenomenon of mental illnesses by Christian thinkers. Mental illness in theological thought is not a punishment, but a temporary test of a person called to overcome obstacles and to ascend to the highest level of religious experience. Also, the illness carries a protective function for sensitive people, whose souls would otherwise have been shattered about the cruelty of the surrounding world, and behind the veil of mental illness "the soul matures and changes". The work also analyzes statements about the essence of some mental illnesses that are not consistent with the position of official medicine.
Key words and phrases: психическая болезнь, христианство, безумие, лжеюродство, христианская антропология, трихотомия, mental illness, Christianity, madness, false foolishness for Christ, Christian anthropology, trichotomy
