THE ROLE OF PORTRAIT SERIES IN THE IDEOLOGICAL-ARTISTIC PROGRAM OF THE CHESMENSKII PALACE

Skvortsova Ekaterina Aleksandrovna
Saint Petersburg University

Abstract. Built for Catherine II, the travel palace near St. Petersburg, now known as Chesmenskii (1774-1777, architect Yu. M. Felten), housed a gallery of portraits of the contemporary European monarchs and members of their families and a series of reliefs-medallions "Genealogy of the Russian Sovereigns". The article presents new archival information about little-known picturesque portraits from this collection and also reveals the structure-forming role and ideological significance of portrait series in the palace program.
