Maidanova Marina Nikolaevna
Russian Institute of Art History in Saint Petersburg

Abstract. The article is an attempt to apply a culturological approach developed by S. S. Averintsev and A. V. Mikhailov to the theory of character, in the context of which the character is seen as a stable cultural form in the European tradition. It is stated that as a result of the fundamental change of its function at the turn of the XVIII-XIX centuries the character lost its inherent normativity and became concrete. The author analyzes emerged in the Russian theatre of the first half of the XIX century figurative structures based on the specific character (by the example of St. Petersburg actor I. I. Sosnitskii’s creativity).
