ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISM AS A FACTOR OF CONTEMPORARY MUSLIMS’ IDENTITY FORMATION

Abstract. The article considers influence of Islamic fundamentalism spread and development on contemporary Muslims’ identity formation. Essence and characteristics of fundamentalism are revealed. The authors substantiate the thesis that fundamentalism is not an antithesis of modernism, and identity formed under the influence of fundamentalism is not a type of traditional identity, but, on the contrary, in its essence and spirit it is reformist identity, and the fundamentalist is often prone to radical reforms.
