NUMBER SYMBOLISM OF ANCIENT MYTHOLOGY BY THE EXAMPLE OF HESIOD’S AND HOMER’S EPIC POEMS

Chelyshev Pavel Valentinovich
National University of Science and Technology MISiS in Moscow

Abstract. The article deals with number symbolism of ancient mythology by the example of Homer’s and Hesiod’s epic poems. Numbers-symbols are regarded as models, which generate an endless series of events and indicate extent of their "completeness" and embodiment in mythological time and space. It is shown that number as a symbol is a bridge between visible quantitative characteristic of the event and its inner cultural content that is intuitively implied in the semantic code of culture.
