Abstract. The article is devoted to the results of historical-pedagogical research in the field of Orthodox education. The leading function of the family in Christian culture - the education of children, is analyzed. Examining the objectives, means and content of Orthodox education, the specificity of the education of preschool children in peasant families in the second half of the XIX - early XX centuries is revealed. The reference to the historical experience of family education provides the opportunity to trace its influence on the developing personality of the child in the period under study and define its main priorities.
