Abstract. The article provides an analysis of one of the basic masculine identities - paternity. The author shows the role of the father as a key figure in the intra-family relations system, evaluates his contribution to education and formation of a child’s personality, identifies his place in the structure of the traditional Buryat society and family. Five father statuses (roles) are considered within the broader framework of social institutions commonly known as the institution of paternity. Specificity of paternity in the Buryat society is emphasized. The researcher’s attention is focused on axiological definitions associated with different spheres of social life.
