Submitted: 09.04.2021
Abstract. The study aims to prove inadequacy of the binary approach in interpretation of disability. The article provides an insight into the issue of interpreting disability through correlated binary oppositions that define it in different periods of time, namely, the researcher examines prospects and consequences of using the principle of binarism in determining nature and status of this group of people. Scientific novelty of the study lies in considering issue of disability through the lens of the binary oppositions that define it. The attained results have shown that inadequacy of using the binary approach to define disability consists in forced subordination of people with disabilities to power hierarchy set by the very nature of the opposition.
