Abstract. The research aims to study the main trends in transformation of ideas about motherhood value and women’s social roles in Marxist philosophy and the concept of consumer society. Scientific novelty lies in carrying out a comprehensive analysis of the shift in motherhood value in philosophical and worldview attitudes of the Soviet and modern society, which reach extremes in the form of refusing to have children and being consumers when it comes to motherhood due to advancements in reproductive technologies. As a result, it is shown that in the conditions where material values of the consumer society prevail, attempts to preserve the notion of gender equality and support for women as workers and women as mothers, which date back to Marxist philosophy, lead to development of extremes in the attitude to motherhood in the form of being "childfree", turning children into an indicator of status and a product of a contract, using surrogate motherhood as a way for women to improve their financial situation. In the setting of the consumer society, surrogate motherhood will inevitably reach unethical forms, but at the same time, it will remain one of the ways to solve problems when planning a family.
