Abstract. The purpose of the research is to consider historical and theoretical aspects of the previously unexplored Venetian folk barcarole, to study origins of its formation, etymology of meanings of the genre that is unique in its musical embodiment of the theme "man and nature". The article is novel in that it is the first to create a typology of the folk barcarole on the basis of the Russian theory of music genres. Foreign works previously unknown in the Russian musicology are translated by the author and introduced into scientific use. Comparing the barcarole and examples of functional music of Western Europe, the researcher determines their commonalities and differences. The findings amount to identification of the genre structural and semantic complex, which then becomes an invariant for composers’ works.
