Abstract. The purpose of the study is to analyse the Russian historical painting at the World Expositions of the turn of the XIX-XX centuries held in the United States. Scientific novelty lies in the fact that the Russian historical painting presented at the World Expositions in the United States is considered as a cross-section of the main achievements of the Russian national school of painting in the second half of the XIX - early XX century. As a result, it is proved that the Russian historical painting that was shown at the World Expositions reflected development of the national school of painting in its main aspects, i.e. coexistence of two leading lines - democratic and salon-academic; prevalence of plots from national history and everyday life. The Russian historical painting introduced history and rituals of Russia in a figurative artistic form to foreign viewers.
