ORGANIZATION OF THE ROMAN COASTAL DEFENSE DURING THE PERIOD OF THE LATE EMPIRE

Abstract.
Naval defense strategy during the Late Empire was based on the principles different from those that had been founded during the period of the Principate. The Roman ground defense against attacks from the sea was organized in different ways depending on the local situation. On the Atlantic coast we find military districts, the protection of the Rhine border at the end of the IV century was given to the federates-Franks, in the Danube region a powerful naval grouping was created, and trade routes in the Black Sea were protected by conventional garrisons.
