Abstract. The article examines the experience of substantiating tolerance towards atheism in the philosophy of the French Enlightenment. The author shows that the basis of the educational conception of tolerance is the idea of religion and morality non-coordination. It is also noted that despite the educators’ efforts tolerance towards atheism remained a special kind of religious tolerance, defective compared to confessional one.
