Abstract. The article is devoted to the experience of determining the boundaries of religious tolerance in the English philosophy of the XVII century. It summarizes the principles of tolerance formulated by F. Bacon, T. Hobbes, J. Locke, J. Toland (the unity of truth, the proportionality of religion to reason, taking religion beyond the scope of social contract). The author highlights tolerance towards atheism and shows that secularity hardly fitted into the framework of the incipient institution of conscience freedom.
