Abstract.
The article is devoted to the events of the period between 1806 and 1812. Having defeated the French coalition forces in 1807 and in order to create a powerful outpost of the empire in the east of Europe Napoleon I created Duchy of Warsaw from the Polish lands seized from Russia, Austria and Prussia, which was semi-independent from France. The author tells about the evolution of the views of Napoleon I on the Polish issue, his struggle with Russia for the opportunity to hold Poland in his sphere of influence, and the constitution of Duchy of Warsaw and its polity.
