DOMESTICI - A SMITHY OF COMMAND-COMMISSIONED PERSONNEL OF THE LATE EMPIRE

Abstract.
Reforming the system of military command led to the emergence of the title “Protector” in the III century. Protectors formed the emperor’s or warlords’ retinue. They also played a role of staff officers and subsequently became commanders of military units. The title “Domestic” appeared at the end of the III century. Probably, Domestics initially performed the tasks of the emperor’s residence protection, but later on they surrounded military masters, as protectors did, and fulfilled their various orders. Both corps, although very small in number, were elite units of the army and served as a smithy of officers’ personnel.
