Abstract. The article examines the hyperbolic metaphor used in the speech of the modern Englishmen for creating the effect of exaggeration. In this connection the peculiarity of the representatives of upper and middle classes - to speak about everything in the exaggerated way - is reflected. Speech strategies implemented by the hyperbolic metaphor in the speech of the modern Englishmen also act as social indicators.
