Abstract.
The article is devoted to the stylistic analysis of abbreviations by the material of Russian and English languages. During the comparison of lexical units received by continuous sampling method from the explanatory Oxford English Dictionary and Small Academy Dictionary edited by A. P. Evgen'eva the stylistic peculiarities of contracted and abbreviated words are highlighted, their main spheres of use in the language are considered, as well as the percentage ratio of stylistically marked vocabulary is identified.
