ON THE ISSUE OF PHILOSOPHICAL AFFILIATION OF THE HISTORIAN POLYBIUS

Abstract.
The article examines certain issues regarding the identification of the ideological and philosophical attitude of the famous historian of the Hellenistic period Polybius from Megalopolis (200-138 B.C.), the author of “The Histories” in 40 volumes. The paper analyzes modern views on this problem. The issue is solved in the following aspects: Polybius - philosopher-stoic and Polybius - philosopher-eclectic. The author aims to deny the widely accepted in antique studies opinion on the stoic affiliation of Polybius’ views.
