SOCIOLINGUISTIC PORTRAIT OF A LANGUAGE AS A METHOD OF MATERIAL COLLECTION AND INTERPRETATION

Abstract. The article analyzes one of the modern methods of material collection and interpretation while studying the social factors of a language development - the sociolinguistic portrait of a language in the two-volume Russian-Canadian work “The Written Languages ​​of Russia” (2000, 2003). It creates an overall picture of the conditions for the language functioning and provides material for the multifactorial analysis of the language situation. The next stage of the research is the Information System “The Russian Linguistic Diversity” (2016) - identification of functional dominants that allow determining the main trends in the functioning of languages.
