Abstract. In the article the examples of giving objects covered with mould or putrid formations for legal expertise of a man's smell traces by law machinery officers are analyzed. Typical situations are considered. Recommendations for the officers of investigating and operational units concerning the prevention of the loss of smell information important for investigation are given.
