Abstract. The article reveals the peculiarities of compulsory military serving by the sailors of merchant ships in the Russian empire (the second half of the XIXth - the beginning of the XXth centuries). The author pays special attention to the benefits and deferments which were granted to not only the command staff of merchant ships but also to the ranks.
