Abstract. The authors reveal symbols typology and their functions in the culture of civilizations, and pay special attention to the fact that a symbol is not only a universal and effective mechanism of cultural memory, but the synthesizing principle of culture unity, the bearer of social heredity, accumulating and combining mankind's new historical experience.
