Abstract.
The author considers the historical and cultural-social conditions of revenge tragedy genre origin and development in the English theatre of the Renaissance, analyzes revenge phenomenon and its role in English society life, traces the parallels between real life events and their theatrical embodiment in bloody revenge tragedies, and suggests the thesis about the theatricality of personal revenge and state justice in the XVth-XVIIth centuries.
