Abstract.
The author gives the definition of the notions sign, sign system, hermeneutics, analyzes the history of their development, researches the form of signs and sign systems, traces the changes in the content of these notions at different stages of historical and cultural development, reveals the meaning and function of sign systems in culture, and analyzes the works of leading scientists, dedicated to signs and sign systems from the point of view of the theory of cognition.
