OXFORD AS PROMOTER OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT RUSSIA AND THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract.
This article reveals Oxford role in the Russian language spreading within Great Britain starting from the publication of the first Russian grammar in 1696. The author considers the active scientific work of many Oxford scientists aimed at the Slavonic peoples study and the British acquaintance with the culture and literature of Russia and the Russian language, and pays special attention to the enlightening activity of such British Slavists as F. H. Trithen, W. R. Morfill, W. R. Ralston, N. Forbes and others, whose joint efforts served as the basis for the creation and future fruitful work of the Russian Language Department at Oxford.
