SECONDARY EDUCATION FORMATION IN SARANSK AT THE END OF THE XIX TH – THE BEGINNING OF THE XX TH CENTURY

Abstract. The author considers secondary education formation in Saransk at the end of the XIX th – the beginning of the XX th century, describes in detail the process of a women’s gymnasium opening and its transformation into the eight-class gymnasium, pays considerable attention to the formation of men’s secondary schools network in the town: the opening of a seven-class non-classical secondary school and a teacher’s seminary, and concludes that the urban population’s education did not correspond to the level of the economic and social-cultural development of the region and Russia.
