Abstract.
The article considers the explanatory potential of some universalist conceptions in the ethics of the ХХ th century and their applicability to the current situation. In particular, the question is about the ethics of responsibility by H. Jonas and discourse ethics (K.-O. Apel, J. Habermas). Special attention is paid to the specific explanatory limited nature of universalist theories under the conditions of the analysis of the many-sided social-cultural phenomena of moral life and social-cultural practice, emphasizing the need to return the nature of practical philosophy to ethics.
