Abstract. The article gives the detailed analysis of one of the little-studied episodes in the European history of international relations in the second half of the XIXth century – the mediation of Great Britain in the issue of the Franco-Prussian disarmament that took place in the early months of 1870. The British diplomatic mission was the last attempt to prevent the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. It is known that this war largely determined the subsequent development of not only the European but also the world history. The author describes in detail the complex negotiations of three great powers, paying particular attention to the techniques used by Great Britain during its mission.
