Abstract. The attempt to identify one of the types of the Roman merchant ships, known according to narrative and archaeological sources as ponto , is undertaken in the article. Different viewpoints concerning the size, naval architecture and tonnage of this sailing vessel had been stated in foreign historiography, but no consensus was reached. The author pays attention to the need for the comprehensive analysis of sources, which will help to avoid fragmentation, false conclusions, and suggests a new vision of the problem solution.
