Abstract.
The article reveals the processes of the development of amateur arts in the Mari ASSR from the beginning of the XX century till the Great Patriotic War in the all-Russian and all-Union context. The author analyzes the reasons for the gradual and stable growth of popularity and demand for amateur talent groups in the mentioned period, problems relating to their organization and functioning, investigates the role of “nonprofessional” associations in the development of the Mari Republic culture.
