Abstract.
The general reconsideration of the events that preceded the disintegration of the USSR can be characterized as a very complex and contradictory process. The analysis of scientific literature represents a variety and even polarity of views on the problems related to the disintegration of the USSR, but these subjects require further research. The article, on the basis of a considerable number of previously unpublished archival documents, proclaims a crisis in the oil and gas complex of the country caused by both objective and subjective reasons among the factors, which determined the acceleration of centrifugal tendencies in the last years of the USSR existence. The paper testifies for the conclusion that the crisis of the oil and gas complex, which was observed at the late industrial stage of the modernization of the country was a systemic one, it predetermined the events disastrous for the country to a great extent.
