Abstract.
In the article an unconventional view on M. I. Glinka’s opera “A Life for the Tsar” is proposed. The author considers the semantic-dramatic functions of the chorus and dances characterizing the Poles, analyzes the reconstructed in choral scenes basic coordinates of the picture of the world. This consideration has given the opportunity to comprehend the specificity of interrelations between the Russians and the Poles in Glinka’s work and to help understand the peculiarities of the composer’s perception of the Russian and the European states during confrontation between them.
