Abstract.
The article characterizes timber cutting business with the ethnolocal group of the southern Vepsians. The research is based on the field data of the author, unpublished archival sources, and publications in periodical press. The paper reveals the reasons for the origin and development of this employment, and characterizes the specifics of its organization. The author accentuates the role of the business in the intensification of the interethnic interaction of the southern Vepsians and the Russian population of the region, and also its influence on the changes of certain elements of material culture.
