Abstract.
In the article the symbolic meaning of the personality of Maratha leader Shivaji Bhonsle, who established the independent Hindu state in the XVII century, is considered. His image is a part of the ideology of the socio-political movements of Maharashtra of the XX-XXI centuries. The author reflects the escalation of interconfessional contradictions in the region, the strengthening of extremist parties positions (Shiv Sena), which make a political capital out of the name of the Indian national hero chhatrapati Shivaji. Recent journalistic materials are analyzed in the article.
