FUNCTIONAL PROPERTIES OF SCALE FRAGMENTS OF MODE IN THE GREGORIAN CHANT

Abstract.
The article considers the functional meanings of the scale formations of the medieval mode represented in the Gregorian chant. The functional content of the nomenclature of scale objects - diatessaron, diapente - is interpreted from the perspective of active structural units - the shortest intonation formations consisting of two adjacent tones in second interval with downward vector. The context of mnemonic process associated with the activity of the observer’s perceiving consciousness - memory and sensory evaluation of sound - contributes to the manifestation of the functional properties of scale “blocks”.
