“SERVITUDE” SYSTEM AS COMPROMISE OF THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH OF THE USA DURING RECONSTRUCTION (1865-1877)

Abstract.
The compromise treaty between the capitalists of the North and the planters of the South after the Civil War is considered in the article. The aim of the paper is to analyze the legal status of former slaves in the post-war period, as well as to determine the reasons and consequences of this treaty. As a result of the study the author demonstrates that the agreement between the political “elites” of the North and the South was in the distribution of the system of “servitude” in the territory of southern states that allowed in the conditions of the formal cancellation of slavery keeping the dependence of black workers on the owners and preventing the mass resettlement of former slaves to the North.
