Abstract. The article considers the problem of the spiritual and moral degradation of a man by the example of ancient mythology heroes. Basing on the textual analysis of Homer’s and Hesiod’s works internal contradiction between the life of heroes or demigods mortal by nature but seeking to become consolidated in eternity at any cost is revealed. “Glorious deeds” acquiring absolute value often put the heroes outside law, morality and turned out their lives in tragedy that ended with death and suffering in Hades.
