Abstract.
The article for the first time in the domestic history of costume analyzes the contribution of J. von Goethe into the spread of “Werther’s uniform” fashion in the second half of the XVIII century, and considers in detail all the stages of its spread: from the origins of the style to its dying away. The theoretical significance of the research is in clarifying the existing ideas about the role of the novel by Goethe in the development of male fashion. The author concludes that although the form of clothes that was described in the book had existed previously, the writer, having created the image of Werther, gave his name to the style and thereby contributed to its widespread in the European male costume.
