Abstract. The article covers the history of creation and activity of the cultural and educational Muslim society “Dzhamiyati-Islamiyah” created by the representatives of the Tatar conservative bourgeoisie and the Muslim clergy of Astrakhan in 1907. This society with right-liberal positions was supported by the authorities, it opened secular primary schools, an athenaeum-library, and published the newspaper “Idel” - one of the first print media in Russia in the Tatar language.
