Abstract. The article presents a new approach to studying the typology of the definitions of extremism and the theoretical interpretations of its social and cultural aspects. The study introduces a notion of methodological patterns, i.e. theoretical and methodological ideas with social-philosophical meanings, which reveal one or another aspect of extremism, but do not explain the mechanisms of functioning and social dynamics of extremism that are examined through purely sociological conceptions. The paper contains the description and comparative analysis of the top five patterns in the interpretation of extremism in the Russian and western studies.
