FORMATION OF NATIONAL IDENTITY IN THE BALTIC STATES

Abstract.
The article provides a comparative analysis of national policy and the formation of national identity in the Baltic States. The paper reveals ethnopolitical reasons for differences and the dynamics of the realization of national policy in the modern period. The author examines external factor in the form of the influence of OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) and the European Union on the liberalization of the legislation of the Baltic States. The researcher concludes on the positive influence of external factor on integration ethnic processes within the Baltic States. Empirical data allow identifying the de-escalation of inter-ethnic tensions in these countries in comparison with the first stage of their post-Soviet independent statehood.
