NATIONAL IDENTITY AND REGIONAL STATUS OF JAPAN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE XXI CENTURY

Abstract. The article examines the problem of the influence of religion (Shinto) on the formation of the national identity of the Japanese at the beginning of the XXI century. The author analyzes relation between the manifestation of the Japanese identity and the aspiration of Japan to play more significant role in the world processes. The researcher emphasizes interconnection between official line with respect to Yasukuni Shrine and the growth of the international ambitions of Japan at the beginning of the XXI century, reveals reasons for the tension of the Japanese-Chinese relations and identifies the influence of the consolidation of the Japanese identity on prospects for the change of the regional status of the country.
