“ZEALOTISM” AND “HERODIANISM”: EXAMPLES OF PATRIOTISM AND COLLABORATION IN THE ANCIENT SYRIAN WORLD

Abstract.
The article touches on the experience of the ancient Syrian public institutions of the Zealots and Herodians as the examples of patriotism and collaboration. In this connection the author examines the ideas of A. Toynbee, who considered these nations as the most universal examples of such phenomena. The author argues for the thesis that hereafter “Zealotism” became identified with the category of “patriotism”, and “Herodianism” is mostly the representation of the policy of collaboration. Certainly, under modern realities the correlation of these terms is very relative, but not without historical truth that the researcher tries to represent in the paper.
