WEAPON AS ELEMENT OF SACRAL CULTURE OF OLD RUS

Abstract.
By the material of written and archeological sources the article examines the place and role of weapon in the culture of Medieval Rus. Weapon was the most valuable status attribute of a warrior, a sacred meaning was assigned to it. It was a symbol of honour, the guarantor of oath - this applies especially to the sword. After adopting Christianity weapon preserved its old meaning and also acquired a new one - it became an attribute of the defender of faith. As opposed to Western Europe where only the sword was considered to be a privileged weapon, in Rus an important role in military culture was also assigned to the ax.
